Name: Callum Johnston

Job Title: Trainee Scaffolder

Company: Shaun Hanney Limited

Reason for Nomination: "A brilliant young man with an outstanding attitude to his work. Having reached out to us with aspirations of becoming a scaffolder, Callum was taken on as a yard operative part time to fit around his college work. Callum would attend college during the day and make his own way to our yard every night and work until 19:00. Callum expressed interest in becoming a scaffolder - right away we booked him on his Health and Safety for Operatives exam. Some people are made to be scaffolders and Callum is one of them!

After failing his first two exams, rather than getting disheartened, he still came to work everyday and grafted hard. Callum explained to us he was struggling with his revision and was unsure whether he was going to be able to pass his test. After two days in the office with revision help from the team, he was booked onto his test again, this time he passed with flying colours and was extremely proud of himself, as were all of us! He has now completed his one day health and safety course and also his cots course!! Callum is well on his way to becoming a scaffolder and we are extremely proud of his hard work ethic and dedication! We believe Callum deserves to become a scaffolding star!"

Name: David Gilmore

Job Title: Account Manager

Company: ITP

Reason for Nomination: "David is celebrating his 25th year with ITP. He started with ITP in March 1997 as a factory operator making elasticated Powerties used to attach scaffold sheeting to the scaffold structure. The ties were invented by ITP and manufactured in-house by David.

Working on the factory floor, David quickly demonstrated a desire to develop his knowledge and his role within ITP. He was promoted to Warehouse Manager, becoming a well-liked and respected presence as he led our warehouse team and continued to demonstrate a characteristic commitment to high standards of service and delivery which he has maintained throughout his time at ITP. David then moved into the office and developed himself as an Account Manager within our Scaffold Team. In this role, David has really come into his own, becoming an exceptionally knowledgeable scaffolding specialist and a go-to expertise resource for scaffolding clients and construction professionals throughout the UK.
David has played a significant part in developing the UK scaffolding market and its products over the years. He had a major role in the development of the environmentally-friendly polyolefin temporary keder roof sheeting which has become widely adopted within the temporary roof system industry.  David has shown an unwavering commitment to the continual improvement of standards within our industry. He is a strong exponent of the relevant standards and regulations for scaffold sheeting, working with contractors to educate and inform, ensuring that construction sites benefit from scaffold containment and protection that maximises performance and safety.
David has been an effective advocate of BS 7955 and, perhaps even more importantly, he has led the way in promoting the adoption of flame retardant scaffold sheeting and the importance of correct certifications (LPS 1207/1215 and TS 62/63) in ensuring that construction sites use sheeting which is genuinely compliant with standards.
David has become a widely known and highly regarded figure within the scaffold industry. He is frequently approached by many people from the industry to get his views on new developments, legislation, applications and product and market knowledge. He always responds with friendly, knowledgeable and impartial advice.

Twenty five years of service is an impressive milestone and we are enormously appreciative of David’s contribution to our success during that time. This year is the perfect time for ITP to put him forward for the Scaffold Star Award, given his very long and ongoing experience and work within the scaffolding industry, and his desire and passion to help others within this industry with his knowledge and expertise."

Name: The Team at Haven Scaffolding

Job Title:

Company: Haven Scaffolding

Reason for Nomination: "Malcolm and his team enabled us to do a charity abseil this summer by building the necessary platform on a local listed building - Wainhouse Tower, Halifax. Totally free. Nothing was too much trouble for them ... even the 400+ steps to climb it, on a good few occasions!

I co-founded the charity - www.mymitomission.uk - having lost my daughter, Emma to mitochondrial disease in 2017. It's little known, with no treatments or cure and we need to raise awareness and funds for research. Covid really hammered our income in 2020 and 2021 so this gesture was like gold-dust to us and because of the donated skills and sponsorship, we managed to raise an awesome £10,000+ and lots of priceless awareness too.

On a personal note, kindness such as Malcolm and his Haven Team's is a huge comfort not only to me as a bereaved parent but to many, many other families who are impacted by this illness. If anyone deserved this nomination - it's Haven. They are absolute #MitoHeroes as well as undoubted #ScaffStars!"

Name: Ian Pickard

Job Title:

Company:

Reason for Nomination:  "Not only did Ian get 100 scaffolders back to work during lockdown by putting together a risk assessment and delivering training, but he also kept everyone in the office safe and able to continue working during the pandemic.

Ian has co-founded two charities in construction: Mankind & SWAG, groups for men who are struggling with mental health, and he has personally saved a groundworker's life from the top of a bridge over the M4.

The aim of the group is to pool mental health first aiders from every company to ensure not only are the big principal contractors covering the ill mental health but the smaller SME’s and supply chain can also tap into the pool. Posters have been produced to be displayed in site canteens and the back of toilet doors. This is so the guys can take screenshots and ring or visit the LinkedIn or Facebook pages away from site. He has over 40 companies signed up to this group now, and it really seems to be working. Within two years they have taken 120 calls and possibly saved 6 guys lives just by listening and sign-posting them to the correct professionals.

Ian has been in construction for nearly 40 years and in health and safety for 25 years, he is passionate about men's mental health and all the work he does is for free! On zoom for two hours per week and on the phone for two to three hours per day just talking to guys. He is continually raising money to pay for the guy's counselling, when they come to Ian they need help now not in 6-8 weeks' time, so he has tirelessly raised money to help pay for counselling for people struggling and ensures that they get that counselling within a few days rather than wait approximately 6-8 weeks before they receive any support from the NHS."

Name: Paige Pickering

Job Title: Trainee Scaffolder

Company: Powertherm

Reason for Nomination: " Paige Pickering (Paige) is a trainee scaffolder at Powertherm and joined us in November 2021. Her role is to help her colleagues to erect and dismantle scaffold and support the team with general labouring tasks. Paige is happy to get involved wherever she is needed. She has come on in leaps and bounds and really got stuck in with anything she is asked.

Paige has been a great ambassador for women in the industry- featuring in our Women in Engineering 2022 update- as can be seen here https://www.powertherm.co.uk/international-womens-day-2022/

Paige has recently completed and passed part one of her scaffolding apprenticeship. Completing part 1 of her apprenticeship involved attending a 10 day training course in Nottingham, where she learnt scaffolding theory before she erected independent, birdcage and putlog scaffolds. On the final day of the course, Paige followed a design plan of an 8ft tower to independently erect the tower safely. This ensured that Paige successfully passed the course.  Paige really enjoyed learning new skills and erecting the scaffolds. She’s looking forward to being able to progress more each day and learning more surrounded by her colleagues, which will allow her to be more involved with jobs on site.

Mick Smith, Scaffolding Contracts Manager at Powertherm said: "I was part of the team that interviewed Paige for her role and can honestly say that she was by far the best candidate

From my part there was always going to be a slight risk how Paige would fit in but she has done brilliantly and gets on great with fellow workers and clients alike. Apart from completing her Part 1 scaffolding card Paige has also completed her confined space & safety passport & is a qualified first aider. Paige has also passed the competent person course at a local power station we are working on and is now authorized to take out work permits. The plan was to train someone from trainee to advance Scaffolder then onto supervisor, if Paige carries on as she has been then I can see no problems at all"

As a company, we are really proud of Paige and how willing she is to learn and get involved with new things. Paige has a great career ahead of her."

Name: Keith Stephen

Job Title: Scaffold Inspector

Company: Speyside Scaffolding Services LTD

Reason for Nomination:

"Keith was diagnosed with Cancer on the 13th November 2020.Keith found a lump beside his kidney which turned out to be non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Keith was admitted to hospital for chemotherapy on the Wednesday 18th November after diagnoses. Keith battled and won and in honesty he kept positive with his work colleagues though I’m sure in private it was a different matter. Keiths partner Kelly was beside him the whole way fighting for Keith to get his treatment when covid hit and treatment sessions where postponed. Keith returned to work end of May of 2021 on reduced duties because his fight with the cancer had left him weak. Keith couldn’t wait to get some sort of normality back in his life. Liam the owner of Speyside Scaffolding employed another inspector at the start of Keiths journey with the cancer and continued to employ him to work along side Keith for as long as it would take to ensure Keith could return only when he was fit enough. Keith is a valued member of our wee team here and we are all so happy that he’s all clear and back to his normal self."
