Today marks Day 5 of National Scaffolding Week 2025 and �� World Mental Health Day , a chance to pause and focus on the importance of looking after our wellbeing, both on and off site.

Scaffolding is physically and mentally demanding work. Long hours, early starts and challenging environments can take their toll. Behind every scaffold are people, individuals who work hard, support one another, and sometimes face pressures that aren’t always easy to see.

This year, we’re encouraging everyone in the scaffolding community to talk, listen and check in , because even the smallest conversation can make a big difference.

Across the industry, more companies are making mental health and wellbeing a real priority. From toolbox talks and Mental Health First Aid training to open discussions on site, these actions are helping to build an industry culture that values care, understanding and support.

As part of National Scaffolding Week 2025 , we’re recognising the incredible contribution that armed forces veterans make to our industry, and celebrating the values, discipline, and teamwork they bring to every role.

Leaving military life can be a big step, but the skills developed through service, leadership, precision, calm under pressure, and a commitment to safety , make veterans a natural fit for scaffolding.

�� Scaffolding Association member Ian Pickard , Managing Director of IDP Safety Services and former Warrant Officer Class 2 and Battery Sergeant Major, explains it best:
“The Army trains its people to the highest standards. You learn discipline, teamwork and problem-solving, but also how to lead, how to stay calm under pressure, and how to deliver results. Those are skills you carry with you for life. I wouldn’t be doing the job I do now without that experience.”

�� Veterans bring reliability, adaptability and leadership from day one, qualities our industry needs now more than ever.

As part of National Scaffolding Week 2025 , we’re proud to spotlight SIMIAN , one of the UK’s leading scaffolding training providers, and their brilliant blog on building a future through scaffolding apprenticeships .

Apprenticeships are at the heart of developing the next generation of scaffolders. They provide the perfect balance of practical experience , structured learning , and industry-recognised qualifications, giving apprentices the foundation they need to build safe, skilled,

and successful careers.

The SIMIAN Apprenticeship Programme is open to anyone aged 16 and over and welcomes people from all backgrounds, from school leavers taking their first step into construction to existing employees who want to gain new qualifications and formal recognition for their skills.

Over two years, apprentices train in real-world environments, learning from experienced professionals and developing the knowledge and confidence to work safely and effectively on site. SIMIAN’s expert instructors and mentors guide every step of the journey, helping apprentices to grow both professionally and personally.

�� “It’s about more than just teaching technical skills,” explains Stephen Robinson , National Apprenticeship Manager at SIMIAN. “It’s about developing confident professionals who can build long and rewarding careers. The demand for skilled scaffolders has never been higher, and our apprentices are helping to raise standards right across the industry.”

The programme doesn’t just benefit learners, it also supports employers. By working in partnership with SIMIAN, companies can access government funding and CITB grants of up to £6,000 per apprentice , helping to grow their workforce and invest in the future of the trade.

With centres in London, Weston-super-Mare, and Warrington , SIMIAN continues to play a key role in closing the skills gap and ensuring that safety, quality, and opportunity remain at the core of the scaffolding profession.

It’s Day 3 of National Scaffolding Week 2025 , and today we’re celebrating the many routes into scaffolding , because no matter where you start, there’s a place for everyone in this industry.

Scaffolding offers opportunities for people from every background. It’s a career that values skill, commitment, and teamwork above all else, and one that continues to open doors for those willing to learn, work hard, and grow.

Across the country, scaffolders are sharing their stories today. Some found their way into the trade straight from school, while others came from completely different careers. Some were looking for a second chance, and others were building on skills learned through military service.

Each story is different, but every one reflects the same thing: pride, purpose, and progress.

�� Apprenticeships
Training providers like SIMIAN are helping shape the next generation of scaffolders through structured, hands-on apprenticeships. These programmes combine practical experience with classroom learning, giving apprentices the confidence and competence they need to work safely and professionally from day one. Apprenticeships are also helping businesses grow their workforce and close the skills gap, investing in a future that’s safe, skilled, and sustainable.

Since his release, Joseph has helped more than 80 people find work through his role at Fulcrum Scaffold Safety & Training, proving that scaffolding is about more than construction, it’s about community, belief, and opportunity.

Scaffolding also attracts those looking for a new start or a change of direction. Whether coming from other trades, engineering, logistics, or even office-based roles, many are finding rewarding careers that combine physical work, teamwork, and visible results. The industry values transferable skills — like problem-solving, leadership, and communication, just as much as technical ability.

Scaffolding is one of the most physically demanding jobs in construction. Long hours, heavy lifting, and exposure to the elements mean your body needs the right fuel to perform safely and effectively.

Good nutrition isn’t about strict diets or cutting out treats, it’s about making sure you’ve got enough energy to work hard, stay focused, and recover well. As part of National Scaffolding Week 2025 , today we’re focusing on how simple changes in what you eat and drink can make a big difference to your health, safety, and performance on site.

Why Nutrition Matters on Site

Scaffolders burn thousands of calories a day, often without realising it. When you skip breakfast, rely on energy drinks, or go long hours without eating properly, your energy levels drop, your concentration slips, and your risk of accidents increases.

A balanced diet helps you:

Maintain consistent energy throughout the day
Improve focus and coordination
Strengthen your immune system
Support muscle recovery and reduce fatigue

Eating well is part of working safely. Just like PPE, hydration, and rest, it keeps you at your best and helps prevent mistakes and injuries.

Even something simple like porridge, eggs, or wholegrain toast gives your body the fuel it needs to start the day strong.

�� Stay hydrated
Dehydration causes tiredness, dizziness, and muscle cramps. Keep a reusable water bottle on hand and sip regularly, especially in hot weather or when working at height.

�� Pack smart snacks
Swap chocolate bars and crisps for fruit, nuts, or cereal bars. They release energy more steadily and keep you feeling full for longer.

�� Choose balanced meals
Try to include lean protein (chicken, fish, beans), slow-release carbs (brown rice, potatoes, pasta), and plenty of veg. You’ll notice the difference in your energy levels.

�� Watch the energy drinks
They give a short burst of energy, then cause a crash that can leave you feeling worse. If you need a lift, try coffee, water, or a quick walk instead.

National Scaffolding Week 2025 – Day 2

Working in scaffolding means working outdoors in all kinds of conditions. From blazing sunshine to bitter cold, driving rain and high winds.

It’s part of the job, but it also means that looking after your physical health and wellbeing is vital all year round.

Today, as part of National Scaffolding Week 2025, we’re focusing on how scaffolders can stay safe, strong and healthy whatever the weather brings.

Sun Safety and UV Awareness

Even in the UK, sun exposure poses serious risks for anyone working outdoors. Research shows that construction workers make up around 8% of the UK workforce but account for 44% of occupational skin cancer cases.

To help raise awareness, the Scaffolding Association has partnered with UV-U-See, a powerful initiative designed to make the invisible visible. Using innovative high-visibility PPE and sun-safety products, UV-U-See encourages workers to recognise the dangers of UV exposure and take simple, effective steps to protect themselves.

Simple steps for working safely in the sun:

Wear UV-protective clothing and high-coverage PPE

Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen before and during shifts

Use a wide-brimmed hat and UV-rated sunglasses

Take breaks in shaded areas where possible

Stay hydrated throughout the day

Sun protection isn’t just for summer. Harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds and reflect off metal, glass and concrete, meaning risk remains high even on overcast days. Making sun safety a normal part of daily site practice helps protect workers now and in the long term.

Working Safely in Adverse Conditions

Scaffolding doesn’t stop for bad weather, but safety should always come first. Cold, wet or windy conditions can make even routine tasks more dangerous by affecting visibility, balance, and grip.

Practical steps for staying safe in challenging conditions:

Check the weather forecast before starting work and plan ahead for potential hazards

Inspect scaffolds regularly, as rain, frost or wind can impact stability and fittings

Wear the right PPE for the weather, including waterproof layers, gloves and non-slip boots

Take regular breaks to warm up, dry off or rehydrate as needed

Stop work in unsafe conditions, particularly during high winds or storms

Adverse weather can also affect concentration and fatigue levels. Managers and supervisors play a key role in ensuring teams know when to pause, reassess or stand down. No deadline is worth risking injury or worse.

Looking After Each Other

Physical wellbeing on site isn’t just about rules and procedures, it’s about awareness and teamwork. Whether it’s checking that your colleague has applied sunscreen, reminding someone to take a break, or raising concerns about wind speeds, small actions make a big difference.

National Scaffolding Week (NSW) returns for 2025 to celebrate the many achievements of the scaffold and access sector and to highlight the wide range of roles and opportunities the industry has to offer.

We’re inviting you to nominate the individuals who go above and beyond every day—on site, in the office, or in the wider community.

In an industry worth over £2.86bn to the UK economy, with more than 34,000 scaffolding operatives and countless others in supporting roles, there are stories of hard work, generosity, and inspiration waiting to be told.

The Scaffolding Association is excited to confirm that National Scaffolding Week 2025 will take place from Monday 6 October to Friday 10 October 2025 .

Now firmly established in the scaffold industry calendar, National Scaffolding Week is a bold and positive campaign that champions the people, progress, and professionalism of scaffolding in the UK. Launched to raise awareness and improve understanding of the industry’s value, the campaign has grown significantly over the last few years.

Since its inception, the campaign has reached thousands of people inside and outside the industry, sparked conversations with government, inspired young people to consider scaffolding as a career, and created new opportunities for engagement between scaffolders, educators, clients, and the wider public.

A central feature of the campaign has been the celebration of #ScaffStars – individuals from all walks of scaffolding life who go above and beyond. From scaffolders on-site to office-based professionals, apprentices to directors, each ScaffStar story has helped to highlight the skills, commitment and pride that define the scaffold community.

But more than that, National Scaffolding Week has become a rallying point for the industry as a whole. It’s a unique opportunity for businesses, individuals, suppliers, manufacturers, training providers, and supporters to come together around a shared purpose: to celebrate achievements, tackle common challenges, and shape the future of scaffolding together. Whether through events, online content, partnerships or local initiatives, the campaign encourages connection and collaboration across all corners of the industry.

Over the last few years, the campaign has seen exceptional support from scaffolding companies, educators, media and partner organisations – all helping to ensure that the industry’s contributions to the built environment are seen, understood, and valued.

This year’s campaign will continue to focus on inspiring the next generation, amplifying authentic industry voices, and most importantly, bringing the scaffold community together as one.

National Scaffolding Week is proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 , taking place from 12–18 May , led by the Mental Health Foundation — the UK’s leading charity for mental health.

This year’s theme, “ Community ”, highlights something we know well in scaffolding: the power of connection, belonging, and everyday support. Whether you’re working at height, on the ground, or behind the scenes, community is what keeps our industry strong — and it’s what can help keep us mentally well too.

Why Community Matters in Scaffolding

Scaffolding is a team effort. From the early starts and long days, to the careful planning and physical demands of the job — no one does it alone. That sense of teamwork and trust is more than just good practice — it’s a lifeline.

Scaffolding Association Launches New Guidance on Scaffold Inspections to Raise Industry Standards

The Scaffolding Association has published the first in a new series of guidance documents designed to support scaffolding professionals and promote safety best practice across the sector.

The new guidance focuses on scaffold inspections, emphasising their essential role in ensuring the safety, compliance, and integrity of scaffolding structures on sites of all types.

As part of its commitment to raising standards and enhancing the professional reputation of the scaffolding industry, the Association is developing a range of practical and accessible resources to assist both its members and the wider sector in understanding and applying best practice.

Robert Candy, Chief Executive of the Scaffolding Association, commented:
“We are committed to supporting our members with clear, practical resources that help maintain safe working environments and uphold the highest levels of professionalism. The UK’s housing targets are under pressure. The construction sector faces a growing skills shortage, and as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) recently highlighted, one of the root causes is alarmingly simple: young people aren’t hearing about careers in construction.

But this problem runs even deeper than housebuilding.

At National Scaffolding Week , we see how the lack of construction-focused careers advice affects the entire scaffolding and access sector. Scaffolding is the backbone of construction — from maintenance on heritage buildings to the delivery of modern megaprojects — yet the pathway into our industry remains under-promoted and often misunderstood.

The contest, which showcased the skills and creativity of industry professionals, saw strong participation from scaffolding experts, judges, and voters alike.

Safe Loading and Vehicle Checks for Scaffolders – Essential Driver CPC Module Launched by Scaffolding Association and RHA

Scaffolding transport comes with serious risks and getting it wrong can result in fines, vehicle prohibitions, loss of an operator’s license, and, more tragically, serious injuries or even fatalities.

For this reason, the Scaffolding Association and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) have this week launched a brand-new Driver CPC training module, 'Safe Loading and Vehicle Checks for Scaffolders.'

This course contributes to the required thirty-five hours of periodic Driver CPC training, mandatory for all professional HGV drivers. Failing to complete this training can result in being unable to legally drive.

Robert Candy, Chief Executive of the Scaffolding Association, said:

"Scaffolding transport is both high-risk and heavily regulated and getting it wrong can have devastating consequences. Poorly secured scaffolding loads can cause serious injuries, collisions and even fatalities.

This new course equips drivers with the knowledge to prevent such incidents, protecting lives and protecting businesses from enforcement action and legal consequences.”

Richard Smith, Managing Director of the RHA, said:

"Load security is a priority for police and enforcement agencies who actively target non-compliant vehicles. There’s a moral obligation too as unsecured scaffolding and unsafe loads not only lead to penalties, but they also put lives at risk.

This DVSA-approved course is designed specifically for scaffolding-related transport and equips drivers and businesses with the essential skills to stay compliant and safe. It arms drivers and businesses with the knowledge they need to prevent accidents, avoid fines, and protect the public."

National Scaffolding Week: Stress Awareness and Our Commitment to Health and Safety

National Scaffolding Week may be over, but our commitment to the industry continues and we’re shining a spotlight on mental health. In the scaffolding industry, physical risks are well-known and managed with care—but the pressures of demanding work schedules, height-related risks, and harsh weather can take a toll on mental health too. Recognising this, the Scaffolding Association is working with the Health and Safety Executive’s Working Minds campaign during Stress Awareness Week to address work-related stress across our sector.

Robert Candy, CEO of the Scaffolding Association, is actively supporting HSE’s initiatives to help scaffolders and employers address the causes of stress, such as workload, lack of control, and insufficient

support. Stress in scaffolding is common due to the physically intensive nature of the job, tight projectdeadlines, and the high focus on safety. These demands can lead to burnout if left unchecked, impacting productivity and well-being.

Through the Working Minds campaign, we’re promoting HSE’s “Five Rs”: Reach out, Recognise, Respond, Reflect, and make it Routine. These actions help scaffolders and employers approach mental health in the same structured way they approach safety checks. Regular stress risk assessments, open discussions, and mental health resources like HSE’s Talking Toolkit can make a significant difference.

The Legal Responsibility of Scaffolding Employers

Under UK law, employers have a duty to protect their workers from stress and mental health risks, just as they do from physical dangers. Ignoring work-related stress can lead to lost workdays, increased accidents, and reduced morale on-site. By making mental health a priority, we aim to create a stronger, more resilient workforce.

For scaffolders, this means a work environment where mental well-being is protected as much as physical safety. Our partnership with HSE supports the well-being of all scaffolders by providing tools and resources to help employers meet their legal duties, reduce stress, and enhance on-site support.

There are three main reasons employers should prevent work-related stress and support good mental health; it’s the law, it’s good for business and it’s the right thing to do.

The construction industry is constantly evolving, with technological advancements shaping how projects are planned, executed, and completed. One innovation making waves across the sector, including the scaffolding industry, is the use of drones. Once associated primarily with entertainment or military use, drones are now becoming an indispensable tool for construction and scaffolding companies.

From improving safety to boosting efficiency, drones are transforming how scaffolding projects are managed.

Enhanced Safety and Risk Management

Safety has always been a primary concern on construction sites, especially when it comes to scaffolding. The use of drones is dramatically improving safety standards by reducing the need for human workers to inspect high-risk areas manually. In many scaffolding projects, workers need to physically climb and inspect scaffolds at dangerous heights. Drones can be used to perform these inspections remotely, capturing high-definition images and video footage of hard-to-reach areas without exposing workers to potential falls or other hazards. This not only reduces the risk of accidents but also ensures that inspections are carried out more frequently and

thoroughly. Drones equipped with thermal imaging can even detect structural weaknesses that are not visible to the naked eye, providing an extra layer of protection for workers and ensuring scaffolding is safe and secure.

Faster and More Accurate Site Surveys

One of the most time-consuming stages in scaffolding is the initial site survey. Traditionally, this involves sending teams to physically measure, map, and assess the site, which can take days, if not weeks, on larger or more complex projects. Drones, however, can significantly speed up this process. With aerial drone technology, scaffolding companies can quickly capture detailed site data and create 3D models of the project area in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional methods. These 3D models can provide a bird’s-eye view of the construction site, allowing for more accurate scaffold planning and design. Drones can also be used to survey existing structures, providing up-to-date, precise measurements that allow scaffolders to make adjustments to scaffolding layouts in real-time. This saves time and reduces costly errors, helping projects stay on schedule.

Improved Project Monitoring and Documentation

In addition to conducting initial surveys, drones are increasingly used to monitor the progress of scaffolding projects. Aerial footage provides project managers with real-time updates, offering a comprehensive view of how a project is unfolding. By capturing regular images and videos, drones make it easier to track scaffolding installation, monitor worker activity, and ensure that safety protocols are being followed on-site. Moreover, drones provide excellent documentation for scaffolding projects. Detailed footage from different

stages of a project allows companies to create a visual record that can be used for client presentations, safety audits, or even legal purposes if needed. This kind of documentation offers a level of transparency that was previously difficult to achieve, fostering stronger communication between all stakeholders.

Maintenance and Inspection Efficiency

Maintenance and inspection are critical elements in scaffolding, especially on large-scale projects that require scaffolds to be in place for extended periods. Drones can be deployed to inspect scaffolding structures for wear and tear, rust, or structural weakness, making it easier to detect potential problems early. In cases where scaffold components need to be checked during ongoing construction, drones can inspect the scaffolding without disrupting workers on the ground. This not only increases efficiency but also reduces

As we mark the start of National Scaffolding Week 2024, the Scaffolding Association are delighted to announce a new partnership with City & Guilds Training with the launch of exclusive Skills Bootcamps for Scaffolding Training.

Skills Bootcamps for Scaffolding Training

City & Guilds Training's Skills Bootcamps for Scaffolding training are exclusively available in partnership with the Scaffolding Association and offer 70-100% funding for Part 1, 2 and Advanced CISRS Courses for both CITB and non CITB registered companies.

The NVQ and Skills Assessments can also be booked separately.

With the scaffolding industry worth over £2.86bn to the UK economy annually, and with over 6,000 scaffolding companies operating in the UK alone, the sector has huge growth potential and offers individuals fantastic progression. The CITB Levy Consultation: Why Scaffolding Employers Should Get Involved

As part of National Scaffolding Week's mission to support and promote the scaffolding industry, we’re urging all scaffolding employers to actively engage in the CITB’s Consensus consultation on the Levy Proposal options for 2026-2029. This critical consultation, running from 26 September to 24 October 2024, offers scaffolding businesses a rare chance to shape the future of skills and training within the construction industry.

What Is Consensus?

Every three years, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) consults with employers across the construction industry to agree on its plans for delivering skills and training through Levy funding. The Consensus process culminates in a key question being asked of employers and ‘Prescribed Organisations’:

"Do you agree that the Levy Proposals are necessary to encourage adequate training in the construction industry?"

This question isn't just about whether the Levy will benefit individual businesses directly, but whether it is essential to the broader construction industry’s ability to develop the skills it needs. Consensus is about ensuring the future of funding for skills and training that will impact the entire sector, including scaffolding.

Once Consensus is achieved, the Secretary of State can approve the Levy Order, which enables CITB to collect funds and continue supporting essential training and development. Without this funding, the industry risks falling short of the skills needed to meet increasing demands, such as the predicted requirement for over 250,000 additional workers by 2028.

The Levy Proposal for 2026-2029 is not just another document – it’s the framework that will guide the future investment in training within the scaffolding sector and beyond. If you’re a Levy-paying employer, this is your chance to ensure the funding system works in the best interest of both the scaffolding industry and the construction sector as a whole.

During the consultation period, CITB is hosting webinars to provide employers with a detailed overview of the draft Levy Proposals. These webinars offer scaffolding employers a valuable opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and understand how these proposals will impact their business. Additionally, Citizen Space, CITB’s online consultation platform, will be open for employers to provide their feedback directly.

It’s essential for scaffolding employers to understand that Consensus is not a vote on the performance of CITB. Instead, it's a process that ensures the industry continues to have a dedicated funding source for skills and training, which will ultimately benefit everyone in the construction industry.

Consult with Your Trade Association: If you’re part of a scaffolding or construction association, share your feedback with them. They’ll gather insights from their members to submit during the Consensus process.

It’s National Scaffolding Week and we’d like everyone to consider the potential danger of coming into contact with electricity when working with scaffolding tubes.

UK Power Networks own and maintain the overhead power lines, underground cables and substations delivering electricity to 8.5 million homes and businesses. This includes 170,000 km of underground cables and overhead power lines, across the East of England, London and the South East.

Sadly every year, I hear of people are killed or seriously injured when they come into contact with high-voltage electricity. Your life can be lost within seconds if you come into contact with electricity. Even if you escape with injuries, it can have a far-reaching and devastating effect on family, friends and colleagues.

Our overhead power lines run across the countryside, supplying local communities with power. The wires can be on wooden poles as well as metal pylons and carry voltages from 230 volts (domestic supply) up to 400,000 volts. Depending on the voltage the wires will be at different heights above the ground. Overhead power lines should be 5.2 metres (17 feet) above the ground, however, associated live equipment fitted on poles may be as low as 4.3 metres (14 feet).

These could be reached when you offload and erect scaffolding tubes, or disassemble them after project completion. Any machinery or equipment that is used near overhead power lines must be considered and controlled to keep everyone safe. There are several different types of scaffolding materials and designs, but whichever type of scaffolding is used, the project planning must start with Safety as the highest priority.

So far this year there have been 15 incidents involving scaffolding and overhead power lines. The risk of these incidents happening could have been reduced if we all encourage an increased focus on concentration, planning and avoiding distractions.

Always remember to:

Assess your safe working clearances to overhead power lines
Ensure everyone working on site, contractors and casual workers are aware of the location and voltages of overhead power lines
Contact UK Power Networks for information on shrouding and disconnections before starting work
Find out the maximum height of any equipment and machinery when all parts are fully extended
Clearly signpost the dangers with high visibility warning notices

Apprenticeships have emerged as a valuable pathway for young individuals to kickstart their careers by gaining essential skills and workplace experience while earning a wage

However, misconceptions surrounding apprenticeships often cloud their true value and potential, especially when it comes to pursuing higher education such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA). In this article, we aim to debunk some of the common myths associated with apprenticeships, shedding light on their funding mechanisms and their potential to contribute to an individual's educational journey.

One common myth suggests that the apprenticeship levy fails to benefit young people. This couldn't be further from the truth, as the levy serves as a crucial means of funding apprenticeship training for both young and older individuals. In fact, more than half of all apprenticeship starts are comprised of young people under the age of 25. To encourage businesses to offer apprenticeships to young individuals, various incentives have been put in place, including exemption from employer national insurance contributions for apprentices under 25 and financial support for employers and training providers when they take on apprentices under 19 or aged 19-24 with specific circumstances.

Another prevalent misconception is that businesses are utilising levy funds to finance staff members' pursuit of an MBA qualification. However, it is important to note that levy funds cannot be used for paying apprentice wages or for qualifications that are not approved as part of the apprenticeship program. While an MBA is not mandatory within an apprenticeship, apprentices or their employers have the option to self-fund the qualification. It's worth mentioning that the Senior Leader apprenticeship, which previously included an MBA qualification, no longer does so, focusing instead on essential content deemed necessary by employers and apprenticeship standards bodies.

Reports claiming that £1 billion of public money was spent on master's courses in apprenticeships are categorically false. Since 2021, no apprenticeships include an MBA qualification. Employers have the autonomy to decide which apprenticeships align with their skill requirements, and the apprenticeship program encompasses a wide range of occupations, from healthcare professionals to managers and tax professionals.

Contrary to the belief that fewer young people are starting lower-level apprenticeships, the reality is that more individuals are opting for higher-skilled apprenticeships at levels 4 and above, such as degree apprenticeships. While this may result in a decline in the number of Level 2 apprenticeships, it signifies a positive shift toward more advanced apprenticeship opportunities.

Apprenticeships play a vital role in supporting disadvantaged young individuals. They provide opportunities for those who may not have achieved GCSE passes to develop essential literacy and numeracy skills, paving the way for higher-paid employment. The apprentice minimum wage has been increased to better support these individuals, and additional funding and bursaries are available for care leavers and disabled apprentices who require extra assistance.

In conclusion, apprenticeships offer a valuable route for young individuals to embark on their desired careers while earning an income and acquiring practical experience. You have the flexibility to recruit apprentices at various levels, ranging from fresh graduates and school leavers to individuals seeking to advance their careers or transition into a new field. You can either employ a new apprentice or train your existing staff to enhance their skills. Additionally, as an employer, you can receive government funding to assist with covering the costs of apprenticeship training.

The benefits of hiring an apprentice are relevant to almost all businesses across all industries. In the construction industry, small companies with two-to-nine employees account for 79% of all businesses. Surprisingly, only 18% of these companies currently employ apprentices.

UK's Fastest Fixer - Winner

Last week was National Scaffolding Week (NSW) , a brand new campaign to celebrate the scaffolding and access sectors' many achievements and promote the diverse range of roles and opportunities available within the industry.

To help raise awareness of the campaign, National Scaffolding Week teamed up with TRAD UK to run a ‘fastest fixer’ competition which was held at various TRAD UK depots across the UK.

Each location fixed a vertical 6-foot tube and challenged employees to fit 12 D/F doubles onto the tube as fast and as safely as they could. TRAD UK provided the same scaffold spanner and fittings for use at each location to ensure everyone was competing like for like.

The criteria set for the competition was as follows:

12 doubles to be laid out on the floor and scaffold spanner handed to the competitor
All nuts are unwound fully, meaning everyone is starting from the same position
Depot adjudicators have a stopwatch and spreadsheet ready to record your time
Adjudicator to issue start instruction
Timing starts immediately from when the competitor touches / picks up first fitting.
Once all 12 doubles are fixed to the tube the timer is stopped
Nuts must be fully tight and should not be able to be loosened by hand.
All names and times will be logged on to a spreadsheet

Unfortunately due to weather conditions and some unforeseen circumstances, some of the depots were unable to take part, so instead of crowning regional winners, all competitors were entered into one nationwide competition and the top four have been named as:

National Scaffolding Week, 26 - 30th September 2022 , partners with TRAD UK to run a ‘Fastest Fixer’ competition across six depots nationwide.

National Scaffolding Week (NSW) is a brand new campaign to celebrate the scaffolding and access sectors' many achievements and promote the diverse range of roles and opportunities available within the industry.

Teal Scaffold share their careers stories

During National Scaffolding Week we want to share information about the diverse range of careers available in the sector in hopes of inspiring a new generation to take up a role within the industry. We asked members of Teal Scaffold to tell us what they love about working in the scaffolding sector and what they would tell someone thinking about embarking on a career in scaffolding.

What you will notice from the accounts of all these people is that they’re all so diverse - men and women with different skill sets, yet they have all found something that they thoroughly love by working within the scaffolding and access sector.

Dan McGregor, Head of Operations, stated when asked what he enjoyed most about his role;

“The diverse groups of people that liaise with on a daily basis which make my role really enjoyable. However, there are two key stand-out points that really make my role fulfilling. The first is the completion of a high-profile project and receiving great feedback from our clients. The second is creating opportunities for personal growth for everyone in our team; seeing individuals changing their lives for the better and knowing that I have contributed in some way to this.”

When asked what advice Dan would give to someone thinking about a career in scaffolding Dan commented “This is a tough industry and you need to be resilient but also willing to learn.”

Traditionally the sector has looked to recruit school or college leavers but there is a much wider pool of talent looking to switch industries who have a whole host of transferable skills and experience. Claire Seddon, Administrator, joined Teal Scaffold with over 20 years of experience as an administrator and knew she could take the skills and knowledge she had previously learnt and apply it to a role within a scaffolding company. When asked about her role, Claire commented;

“I was looking for a new challenge and so I applied for the position as I have over years of administration experience and have numerous transferable skills I am able to use in my role.”

Not only does the sector need to recruit, but it also needs to retain. Retention of staff is just as, if not more important, as bringing in new talent. By retaining the right people, the sector ensures its longevity and continued success. In order to keep the right people, companies and training providers must offer up development opportunities for existing staff so that ambitious and forward-thinking individuals can hone their skills and carve out their own rewarding careers. Freddie Lambert, Scaffold Manager, says of his career “ I have worked in the scaffolding industry for 40 years for many firms, on many sites, learning al the time. I then started at Teal Scaffold as an Advanced Scaffolder, then a Supervisor and now as a Manager.”

When asked what he enjoys most about his role job, Freddie replied “The best part of my job is showing new scaffolders how to progress within the industry.”

This is just a small selection of feedback we had from those already working in the sector - we could have written much much more. What is clear from all the responses we had is that the scaffolding sector is a welcoming, friendly and diverse sector to work in and offers a rewarding career for those that are willing to learn.

Plugging the skills gap and refilling the talent pool

Recruitment in all sectors has become an uphill battle. With the loss of migratory labour largely due to the pandemic and Brexit, industry as a whole has been hit hard over recent years. However, as far as construction is concerned, opportunities and demand are forecast to increase and prospects for the future are looking much brighter.

However, to be able to provide the opportunities that this increased demand will bring, the scaffolding sector needs to plug the skills shortage it is currently experiencing. Over the last few years, we could liken scaffolding to a leaky bathtub - a large pool of experience and skills which are quickly swirling down the plughole of retirement. Add to this a tap which is slowly trickling new talent through and you are quickly in a skills deficit.

So, how do we attract more people to take up roles within the scaffolding sector and stop the skills leak?

There are many ways we can do this and proactive campaigns, such as National Scaffolding Week, are just one of them. By promoting the scaffolding sector for what it is - a diverse and rewarding sector - we can slowly begin to bend the ear of a new generation and encourage them to seek employment in a sector which is due to see much growth and investment over the coming years. Changing the perception of scaffolding is just part of a battle we need to overcome in order to win the recruitment war.

We mustn’t forget that new talent can come in all different shapes and sizes, for example, schemes to support ex-offenders and ex-armed forces personnel during their transition into new posts are becoming increasingly popular and well-funded. Similarly, talent can come from career-changers, those who have started along a career path and now, for whatever reason, are looking to ‘jump ship’ and retrain in a completely different industry.

Many employers would say funding is a major stumbling block for developing and retaining talent. So, what can be done to help? The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and your local trade association will be able to help and support you in working out what funding you could secure. For example, the Skills and Training Fund can help small and micro construction companies fund and deliver learning and development opportunities for their workforce. Conversely, for larger companies with more than 250 directly employed staff can access funds to help develop and improve leadership and management skills. If you think scaffolding could be a viable option for you, there are several routes you can take to help you on your journey to becoming a scaffolder. You could search for an apprenticeship via the Apprenticeships website, apply directly to a local employer or complete a college course at level 1 or 2 in a construction-related field.

There are no formal qualifications required to start working as a scaffolder, however, in order to work as a scaffolder on a construction site, you will need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card to demonstrate your competence

How ‘big’ is scaffolding

The simple answer is big! Currently worth a massive £2.86bn to the UK economy and with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) predicting that at least 200 competent scaffolders will need to be recruited annually to meet construction demands, this number is only set to increase.

The UK is home to over 6,000 scaffolding companies employing some 34,000 scaffolding operatives - and this doesn’t take into account the other associated roles within the industry. However, with an ageing workforce and skills leaving the sector faster than they can be attracted, initiatives like National Scaffolding Week are needed more than ever to help promote and provide a platform upon which scaffolding can be seen as a rewarding and viable career path.

Tim Balcon, CITB CEO, said “Construction is vital in supporting the backbone of the UK economy. These future growth projections are encouraging after the stalling effects of the pandemic. However, this is set against a current backdrop of higher energy costs, material shortages, and associated price inflation that is currently hitting companies across the sector.

“Recruitment and developing a highly skilled workforce will be by far the construction industry’s biggest challenges over the next five years. However, industry has a lot to offer and needs to use its many strengths to attract and retain top talent in a competitive recruitment landscape”

With this demand for workers, inevitably comes job opportunities - great news for school leavers and career changers. The scaffolding sector is an inclusive and accessible environment which provides opportunities for all, regardless of age, gender and background. From HGV drivers to scaffold designers, there’s a role for everyone.

Historically scaffolding has been perceived to be a job for men and as something to turn to for those people that fall between the cracks of the education system. But this is an outdated and wholly false claim. As you will see over the course of the National Scaffolding Week, scaffolding is a diverse industry made up of people from all walks all life. Women now make up an increasing part of the scaffolding sector, demonstrating they are able to offer the same value as their male counterparts.

The key to success for the scaffolding industry lies with its employers. Attracting, developing and retaining new talent and skills to the sector will provide the recruitment boost needed to meet government aims and build the homes and buildings that the country needs to ultimately boost the UK economy. Engaging with your local schools and colleges

Up to date and relevant careers information needs to be made accessible to young people so that they are aware of the diverse and well paid careers and opportunities that are available to them within the scaffolding sector. By engaging with your local schools and colleges you can raise the profile of the industry as a valid career choice while encouraging young people to work for your business.

A high number of even brief contacts with a business can play an important role in helping young people to explore, clarify and confirm their career choices. You can create opportunities to talk to students about roles in depth and let them know what it is really like to work in your industry through your local schools and colleges, by:

Taking part in careers fairs and careers days
Offering to deliver careers talks and raise awareness of the opportunities available to young people
Erect scaffolding or arrange to undertake demonstrations
Inviting students to visit your offices or sites to see first hand what goes on
Offering work taster days to provide an insight into the different careers on offer

Undertaking activities like this will help provide local young people with access to new and trustworthy information, along with useful contacts to help them pursue their career in the scaffolding sector!

So what are the benefits of undertaking engaging with schools and colleges to your business…

A better match between your business needs and the young people interested in a career in scaffolding means increased recruitment, raised productivity, improved retention, and reduced training and supervision costs!

You can involve willing employees in the mentoring and supervision of work placements or school presentations to improve staff morale and encourage their own development and learning! It is really rewarding for staff to be involved in the development of young people and helps improve their confidence and management skills.

Raising the profile of your business within local schools and colleges demonstrates that the business is socially responsible amongst your local community. By engaging with young people from a range of different backgrounds who may not have considered a job in their sector before provides you with a chance to give something back!

You can help change the demographics of the workforce to reflect your local community. This can involve anything from encouraging more girls to think about engineering to encouraging more young people from ethnic minorities to consider careers in scaffolding. It’s beneficial for your business’s staff profile to mirror that of your local community and customer base.

Business engagement in your local community is often viewed favourably by potential clients, and engaging with work experience helps you build stronger relationships with your suppliers, customers and clients, and could open up new business opportunities.

Working with your MP

Members of parliament are there to represent us – that’s their job! Getting support from your local MP can be really useful to your business. Not only can it raise the profile of your company, but they are often a good source of advice and information on specific issues.

Don’t be put off by your MP’s political party! The work they undertake in their constituency is not related to the work they undertake within their political party. It doesn’t matter whether or not you voted for your MP, they will be able to support you and your business.

Getting in touch with your local MP might feel a bit nerve wracking but it’s up to you to make sure they are aware of the issues that matter to businesses, like yours, in their constituency. By investing in building a lasting relationship with them and establishing regular contact, not only will you and your business receive greater publicity and support with work that you are doing in your area, but you will also be able to inform and influence decisions about things that will have a wider effect in your area.

Having your MP on board can be helpful to spread the word about what you are doing in your local area and potentially can help to secure new projects, resources and partners. This could involve asking your MP to publicise a scheme or project you are working on, to requesting public support for your work that can be featured in your local newspaper or trade press.

You can also call on your MP for support if there are major issues getting in the way of a project moving forward or getting something off the ground. If they can help you, they will, but it will mostly involve matters which parliament or central government departments are responsible for, like skills and training. That said they often can show support for issues that arise related to other public and private bodies.

You can also engage with your MP to encourage them to support a local or national campaign that you are passionate about (like National Scaffolding Week!). It’s useful to find out what your MP has been saying about a topic, if they have been involved in anything similar and see if this is something they would support. When you get in touch with them remember to link back to your experiences as a member of their constituency and why it is important to you. If they are able to offer support they might be able to help gain publicity for the campaign and can even introduce you to other businesses or partners that might be interested!

One of the easiest and most effective ways to build a relationship with your MP is to write them a letter that you can post, or send by email. As one of their constituents, you should receive a reply. Include in your letter:

What you want your MP to do: promote a campaign or help you achieve something
Why this is important to you and why you want their help
What the local benefits of their help will be
